This quarter, the spotlight is on New York, the city that never sleeps.
With work commitments likely to take up a large portion of time in NYC, make sure you and/or your family make the most of your time by taking a look at our top tips below.
At the weekend...New York Pass
The New York Pass offers admission to more than 40 top attractions in New York City such as the Statue of Liberty, American Museum of Natural History and The United Nations Tour. A one-day pass costs $75, and in addition you will receive a 150-page pocket-sized guide book. The card also provides access to discounts and special offers at top restaurants and retailers.
One for friends or family...the Big Apple Greeter
One of the best ways of getting acquainted with New York City is with the help of a resident, and this highly successful scheme provides free guides to help you do just that. There are about 350 volunteer greeters who bring visitors to neighbourhoods in New York City, and 30 volunteers who work in Big Apple Greeter's office answering visitors' questions, matching visitors with greeters and organising special events.
Day to day travel...the MetroCard
For getting around, the MetroCard helps you save. A 30-day pass costs $89 and provides unlimited subway and bus journeys. The card can also be shown at participating museums, restaurants and stores around town to get discounts on admission, membership and more.
Broadway Tickets
New York just isn't complete without a trip to Broadway. If you want to see one of the popular Broadway hits, order your tickets online or by telephone weeks in advance as they generally sell out. For last minute deals, go to the TKS booth in Times Square on the day of the performance and purchase half price tickets.
Security
After 9/11, security was heightened throughout the city, so never leave valuables unattended, as there's a chance of sparking a major alert. You should also expect to have your possessions inspected thoroughly in places such as airports, sports stadiums, museums, and city buildings, and if you are going to any major tourist attraction such as the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, ensure you have your passport with you as you will need photo ID to enter.
Tipping
In New York City, like the rest of the US, service charges are generally not included in your bill. Waiters, waitresses and bartenders expect to receive from 15 to 20%, taxis around 15% of the fare, while the bellboy at your hotel should expect to receive around $1 per bag.
Taxis
Iconic in NYC, but not always the best way to travel! NYC taxi cabs can be notoriously difficult to get, particularly between 3pm-6pm. This is partly because many cabs change hands between drivers between 3.30pm to 4:30pm. If you want to travel by cab, be prepared to battle it out with fellow commuters, otherwise we suggest using your MetroCard and taking the subway or bus.
